What is a Halfway House?

A halfway house is a supportive residential setting that offers essential assistance to men and women reentering society after being released from prison or individuals completing drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Although each facility may have its own set of expectations and requirements, most of them implement regulations aimed at safeguarding the well-being and sobriety of residents, as well as fostering the acquisition of skills pertaining to daily life activities, job readiness, interpersonal connections, and more.

Located in Houston, the Day 41 Resource Center operates a halfway house for men who have served ten or more years in prison and opt to abide by a set of basic house rules for the benefit of all residents.

Residents are required to abstain from alcohol and drugs, with the possibility of random testing by halfway house staff to verify compliance. The use of drugs, alcohol, and related items is not allowed in any halfway houses in Houston or Texas.

Job Placement. Residents are expected to actively seek employment within 30 days and remain employed. Upon securing a job, a weekly fee of $125.00 per guest is charged to cover rent, utilities, and food expenses. Our halfway house in Houston provides valuable support to residents, including assistance with job placement, job training, application submission, interview preparation, and more.

In our home, we host various meetings such as twelve-step programs, entrepreneurship workshops, financial management sessions, bible study classes, and reentry programs. These gatherings aim to equip our residents with the essential skills needed to reintegrate into society after being in prison.

Behavior and curfew rules. At our halfway house in Houston, we strictly forbid physical and verbal altercations and dishonest behavior (such as stealing) and enforce a specific time when residents must be back home. Additionally, we expect guests to contribute by completing nightly chores to keep our halfway house clean and orderly.

Furthermore, we have visitation regulations in place primarily to safeguard the well-being of residents and staff. Family visits are scheduled every Sunday after the church service, between 2:00 and 8:00. Nonetheless, appointments can be arranged from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday through Friday and anytime on Saturday. Only the resident's underage children are permitted to visit.

Failure to comply with the regulations of a halfway house can lead to severe repercussions, such as being expelled on the spot or receiving warnings after three violations. Departure from the facility will be required. It is essential to recognize that these regulations are implemented to safeguard the residents' safety and welfare, and adherence is vital for a smooth transition.
